Plant and Pick Project - An apple for the teacher?
A Development Committee of Mumbles Community Council project.
This year Mumbles Community Council is not holding the Mumbles in Bloom Competition. Instead the Council has decided to provide rare varieties of Welsh apple trees to the local schools, as its contribution to supporting sourcing local products. The schools have been very enthusiastic about receiving the trees which we have chosen for their historical link with Wales and their resistance to disease. The trees which we have chosen from a specialist nursery are as follows:-
Afal Pig aderyn (eater from St. Dogmaels) A tree of Norman origin and still found near Carmarthen. A sweet and juicy fruit, renowned for its excellent single variety cider.
Afal Pren Glas (early eater from St. Dogmaels)
Bakers Delicious (early eater)
Channel Beauty (eater from Mumbles)
St. Cecilia (eater from Bassaleg) A heavy cropping tree with an intense flavour, which is said to be at its best on St. Cecilia's Day (November 22nd)
Landore (dual-purpose apple) This apple will keep until after Christmas.
Landore is mentioned in the diary of Francis Kilvert and has been grown in the area around the Black Mountains since Victorian times.
Trees are to be ordered from - Paul Davis, Capel Isaac, Llandeilo. email: applewise@tiscali.co.uk Information taken from www.iansturrockandsons.co.uk email iansturr@clara.co.uk

GARDEN THEFTS IN WEST CROSS

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS PLANNING APPLICATION
THIS IS IN THE CONSERVATION AREA OF NEWTON
Help save this tree, and others on this proposed building site.
A planning application has been submitted by Carrington Moore Estates to City and County of Swansea to build 5 detached houses, 3 with detached garages on the land of Picket Mead House, Murton Lane, Picket Mead, Newton, Swansea.
There is also road to be built alongside the outer wall to an access point, which is at the moment is an old entrance to an out of use garage. This has not been used for many a long year, as there is no road access.
An objection to this plan has been submitted by the Mumbles Community Council on the grounds that this site is in a Conservation area with a possible loss of trees on site and will allow extra vehicle traffic over this open space of common land, where children play.
There is a Maple Tree (pictured below) that forms part of the outer wall. If the current development proposals are approved the tree's roots will be cut through by the foundations for the new road crossing the common, in front of the existing house to the development site, as it is planned to pass directly below the main branches of tree in the picture. This will mean that many lower branches will have to be cut off. The concern is that it will die after its roots are severed.
The developer has been in touch with Mumbles Community Council and asked us to state that he has no intention of developing on Pickets Mead.
HONOUR OF MUMBLES 2009
Mumbles Community Council awarded the Honour of Mumbles to three of its citizens on Wednesday 9 September 2009.
These awards were made to the Rev’d Cannon Keith Evans, Vicar of All Saint's, Oystermouth, Rev Howard Long, Minister of Mumbles Methodist church and Alex Frith, writer and director of the Bumbles of Mumbles Children’s Spectacular. They were presented with framed certificates by the Chairman of Mumbles Community Council, Cllr Brian Arthur at a presentation evening at the Conservative Club in Mumbles.
Cllr Arthur said “the honour had been awarded to the recipients for their outstanding contribution to the community of Mumbles.”
“On behalf of the people of Mumbles we thank them for their time, effort and enthusiasm which we hope will continue for many years.”
