Public to have say on Mumbles Pier plans

Friday, September 19, 2008, 07:15 see full report in South Wales Evening Post

It's one of Swansea's most famous landmarks and now members of the public
are being asked for their feedback on plans to redevelop the historic Mumbles Pier.

People have until Friday, October 17 to offer their views on proposals that
would see the attraction regenerated into a leading visitor and tourist
destination.

Ameco, the family-run business that has owned the pier for more than 70
years, wants to restore the 110-year-old landmark and build a luxury 150-bed
hotel and spa, a conference and exhibition centre, and an enhanced range of
all-weather attractions and restaurants.

It also hopes to provide improved public spaces, including a boardwalk
linking the pier to Knab Rock, as well as safeguarding the RNLI's proposed
new lifeboat station

Swansea Council's cabinet has now approved a draft development framework
that will guide plans to revamp the pier.

Swansea Council leader Chris Holley said: "It's our aim to make the most of

Swansea Bay's enormous potential and to develop a world-class destination
that can compete with the best in Europe.

"Redevelopment in Mumbles will play a big role in helping us realise that
objective, but it's vitally important the people of Swansea get an
opportunity to have their say on any proposals for the area.

"All views will be taken on board and we'd encourage people to come forward
with their feedback.

"Mumbles Pier is a famous attraction and this draft development framework
will guide exciting plans to restore it for future generations to enjoy."

A spokesman for Ameco said: "Ever since we revealed our plans for the
redevelopment of the pier, we have received extremely positive feedback and
we welcome the opportunity to hear even more views on our proposals. We
believe our plans ensure the pier's future while creating a premier tourist
destination.

"We have worked very closely with Swansea Council to ensure our proposals
aim to reflect its aspirations and we will continue to work with it to help
achieve its aims through a scheme that can regenerate Mumbles, boost tourism
and create employment opportunities."

You can view the plans at www.swansea.gov.uk or in hard copy at Mumbles
Library or the Civic Centre.

"Council slammed over club site"

This is the headline in the South Wales Evening Post 12-9-08

The story by Reporter, Richard Youle comments that the "Dithering Council

Planners are losing Mumbles vast sums of much-needed investment, it has

been claimed. It would appear that City Councillor for Mayals, Rene Kinsett

is 'frustrated' about a fresh attempt to build a smart new health club in his

ward! The multi-million pound scheme has planning permission, but has been

on hold for years. Comment ; If EP Leisure had received planning

permission 'years ago'. why did they not proceed with the work of building

this 'smart new health club' at the time.? Your comments please.

The article goes on to refer to the '20 years saga ' with Swansea Council over

plans to develop Oystermouth Square in Mumbles. Once again I understood

that planning permission had been granted for a development (perhaps I'm

wrong). Nevertheless someone has to get a grip with situation and get on with

agreeing to the plans and start building before the next generation of

youngsters have grownup. If Cllr. Kinsett can get the planning department to

'get their act together' I say all power to him and his fellow Councillors.

There have been some concerns expressed over the siting of the 'smart new

health club, with difficult access to the site and the use of 250 car parking

spaces in such a popular area, with the childrens play area of Blackpill just

across the road. The redirection of the stream to a new course must also give

concern to possible flooding at high tide. Your further comments please.

OLDER PEOPLE'S COMMISSIONER FOR WALES.

RUTH MARKS, MBE IS THE FIRST OLDER PEOPLE'S

COMMISSIONER FOR WALES and she will be a guest speaker at the

Annual Meeting of Swansea Network 50+ Group which will be held on

Tuesday 25th November 2008. If you have any questions for the

Commissioner please send them to Richard Stafford, Development

Officer, Strategy 50+ Room 3.1.15a, Civic Centre, Oystermouth Rd,

Swansea SA1 3SN or email 50plus@swansea.gov.uk,he will place

them before the Commissioner and let you know of the outcome.

THE EFFECT OF TRAFFIC CALMING FOR THE NEW WELSH

PRIMARY SCHOOL IN WEST CROSS AND THE TROUBLE

WITH THE 'RAT RUNS'.

When the plans for the new Welsh school in West Cross Lane were

considered and passed by the City Council, many of the local residents of

West Cross expressed their concerns over the impact that 'road calming'

measures, associated with the school, would have on the residential status of

West Cross.

All residents accept that traffic 'calming measures' should be put in place to

ensure the safety of children who go to and from this and any school.

But, alas the planners of City and County Swansea and their Highways

Consultants did not have the foresight of the local residents. The Planning

Dept., together with the Education Committee did not listen to the residents

and allowed 'traffic calming' measures to be installed in West Cross lane!

The outcome is now showing evidence that streets which had little or no

through traffic now have a constant flow, to avoid these 'traffic calming'

measures, and the streets that had a steady flow, now have severe traffic

problems!

West Cross has not been helped by unnessesary traffic lights being installed

near Oystermouth school on Newton Road, at the corner of Langland Road

and Lime Kiln lane, when a Pelican crossing might have served a better

purpose (and saved money). Traffic is now avoiding this area to miss the

length of Newton Road down to Mumbles Road, which is now more like a

parking zone as it is full of illegally parked lorries and cars. Traffic from

Newton, Langland and Caswell now travel over Southlands Drive and use

Chestnut Ave. as a 'Rat Run' (some might say, ' a race track').

Traffic movement through this area has gone up four fold since the

restrictions have been placed in West Cross Lane. This extra traffic has

caused more delays on Mulberry Ave. and the junction with Fairwood Rd.,

Traffic has also been using Cypress Ave as a 'by-pass' also Mayals Green

(which is for residents access only) is used as a short cut to Mayals Rd.,

Other roads which are suffering excess traffic, by drivers avoiding West

Cross Lane are Glen Rd., Elm Grove, Cedar Crescent, Linden Ave., and

Fairwood Rd.

The persons who made the decision to build this school at this location must

bear the full consequence of any tragic road accident which occurs at this

location. WHAT PRICE DID THEY PUT ON LIVES OF THE RESIDENTS?

This article is a contribution by Cllr. Brian Arthur, who lives in and represents West Cross Ward on the Mumbles Community Council.
