MUMBLES COMMUNITY COUNCIL

MUMBLES IN BLOOM 2007

The competition was held once again this year and

judging was carried out on the 14th July. what a

relief it was to have a dry sunny day for the judges

to carried their work.

the Community Council Chairman, Cllr. Roger

Beynon kindly chauffered the judges around the

area. The judges, Mr. Ian Scott and Mr. Steve

Protheroe were very impressed with all the entries

this year. Their comments at the end of the day

included:- "We were impressed by the imaginative

designs and the effort put into the garden displays

We were disappionted that more gardeners and

business premises had not entered, especially as

we saw some exhibits which would have stood a

good chance of winning!

We feel that competition brings pride and colour

to Mumbles and we would like to see more new

entries next year".

The Primary schools were judged on another day

by Cllr. Roger Beynon, Cllr. Mrs. Olive Rees and

Cllr. Mrs. Linda Tyler Lloyd. They had focused on

different aspects of gardening. For example,

Oystermouth School had produced a wonderfull

variety of vegetables that they hoped to sell, also a

colourful display of flowers.Well done all of you for

competing in very difficult conditions this summer.

The winners have been notified and an

awards evening was held on Wednesday the

5th September 07at 7.30 pm at the Conservative

Club, Mumbles.

The Community Council thank the judges for the

dedicated and hard work they put in on the day of

judging. Presentations were made by Maureen

Cottey and Cash Hardware also Ian Scott.

SAND DREDGING ON HELWICK BANK

Can you really believe the letter from Mark

Russell. (S.W.Evening Post 31-8-07 Dredging facts put

straight ) as Director of British Marine

Aggregate Producers Association he quotes

the report from Clive Nield, Inquiry Inspector

"discusses the the sand loss on Port Eynon and Horton beach in his report and concludes that measures to reverse erosion on the sand dunes behind the beach between the late 1970s and early 1990s proved successful but at the expense of of the sand resource on the beach. He concludes " There is little doubt the overriding reasons for the deterioration of the beach since the 1970s has been the loss of sand to the dunes area behind the beach rather than any offshore dredging".

Comment, If you believe that then you could perhaps believe anything !

A recent programme on TV showed a beach 'up North' be transformed by the extraction of sand from a sandbank offshore and placing it on the beach to replace that which had been eroded by storms.

This also happened in Bournemouth some years ago.

WHY CAN'T WE DO THAT?

Your comments please
