REPORT ON THE PACT MEETING held at the Conservative Club on Weds. 4th Nov. (by Cllr. H. Mitchell)

The meeting was well attended by local residents of Oystermouth and Newton Wards, also two Swansea City Councillors were present and three Mumbles Community Councillors.

Patrick Dunbar, Police Community Support Officer, took the meeting and started by reporting that 'Operation Bang' covering Halloween was a success, and it will be implemented again for Guy Fawkes Night. There was a total of 20 officers on duty, patrolling the area and special attention was paid to the trouble spots, eg, Underhill Park and Newton village.

Luke Raddenbury had completed his training on 'hand held cameras' and it is hoped that this wil be put to good use in the areas where the speeding motorists frequent.

Patrick is going to organise another 4 day road show in the local shops, on the run up to Xmas, similar to what he did at Somerfield in Mumbles a few months ago.

The next meeting with the Mumbles shop owners will be held at the end of November.

'Bobby Knocking' is an initiative just starting where a police officer targets one street per week and knocks on doors to introduce himself and ask if there are any problems the resident would like to discuss.

The Police will now be able to use the St. John's Ambulance Hut in Langland to be on hand as and when there is likely to be 'unruly' incidents.

Last meetings issues:- Criminal Damage and Parking still ongoing, but Police are to be more pro-active towards parking.

Issue raised :- Traffic problems in Western Lane and Village Lane. Residents want help to stop through traffic and cars travelling wrong way against the one-way system.

Date of Next PACT Meeting, is 3rd FEBRUARY 2010 in the Conservative Club @ 7pm

Do be there and let the local police have your views.

FLOODING IN BLACKPILL

Due to the heavy rain over a period of a few days, and in particular overnight Sat 31st Oct and Sun1st Nov, a culvert at the bottom of Clyne Gardens, alongside Clyne Chapel, was so blocked by leaves and debris, the stream overflowed over the retaining wall, and the water proceeded down the lane alongside the Woodman Pub, turned left onto the Mumbles Road, passed the drains (as they were blocked by leaves) and then took another left down the lane alongside the Blackpill Post Office and consequently flooded the gardens of the cottages to a height of over 18inches.

In order to attempt to avoid further flooding, the postmaster and another neighbour waded through the deluge of water and physically tried to clear the leaves and debris at 6.30am. Emergency crews were called out, arrived, did nothing and then drove away.

Cllr.H.Mitchell visited the area in the afternoon. As a result, City & County of Swansea were contacted and arrangements were put in place for the cleaning operative, paid for by Mumbles Community Council, to visit the area morning and late afternoon to attempt to avoid a further build up of leaves. This has now been done, and the operative has done a stirling job.
It is hoped that this action will go some way in alleviating the problem, but action is needed to be taken by C&CS to solve this long standing and ongoing heartache to the residents.

THE GREAT ESCAPE!

"TODDLERS ESCAPE FROM NEW SCHOOL"

It was reported in the Evening Post, 6th November, that a pair of toddlers escaped from the new Welsh school, Ysgol Gynradd Gynraeg, Llwynderw, West Cross. This happened on the 18th Sept. 09.

It appears that they were not missed for around 20 minutes; - they had found a hole in the new fence at the new £6 million facility and wandered away.

Fortunately the two boys were found in Bethany Lane, by staff from the adjoining Grange Primary school, and were returned safely to the Welsh school.

FUNDRAISING CHAMPION- MargaretThrush MBE

It is reported in the Evening Post, 10th November, that Margaret Thrush MBE,

a Mumbles pensioner, has collected £100,000 over the last 4 years, for her

latest charity, Macmillan Cancer Support . We also wish to congratulate

Margaret on her stirling efforts. Margaret has previously been awarded the

'Honour of Mumbles' by the Mumbles Commumnity Council for her efforts in

supporting various charities.

LANGLAND BAY HUTS are once again ready for a revamp.

It is reported in the Evening Post, 10th Nov that a further 5 beach huts are due

to be refurbished and transformed during the third phase of the programme to

update these Victorian huts, which are suffering from wear and tear, after

many years of neglect , vandalism and bad weather conditions.

The only drawback to renting one of these fine beach huts, is the very high

rental of £10,000 in return for a 10 years lease.

This of course makes the old annual renting of these huts, for the general

public, well out of their reach. So those 'locals' who have used these huts for

many years, will still have to resort the use of towels to change behind !

Protesters Joy at Dredging Turnaround

The Evening Post reported on Friday 6th November the intention of Llanelli Sand Dredging to relinquish its licence to dredge sand from the Helwick Bank, just off Port Eynon, which has been welcomed by protesters. They blamed the dredging for the loss of sand from Port Eynon beach over the period that dredging has been carried out although an Assembly inspector blamed the deterioration of the sand dunes at the rear of  Port Eynon for the lack of sand on the beach.

Llanelli Sand Dredging has a licence to remove up to 1,050,000 tonnes of sand from the Helwick Bank over seven years. In return for giving it up the dredging company wants a variation on a second licence they have on dredging on the Nobel Banks that are further out to sea in the Bristol Channel. They have carried out an environmental impact assessment on the proposed licence variation for the Nobel Banks and said "it won’t result in more sand being removed than before".

Protesters who fought long and hard to prevent the original licence being granted were disappointed with the result of a public enquiry in 2002 but feel it has had an impact on the decision by the company to relinquish the licence now.

One of the key problems for the building and construction firms is the lack of any alternative means of supply of sand but they have given a reassurance that they will monitor closely any impact from sand removal on the Nobel Bank.

It is good to know that people power has made the company rethink its policy and is being more proactive in looking at the environmental impacy its work may have.

MUMBLES TOP SHOPS

CHRISTMAS EVENT AND LIGHTS SWITCH-ON

The Mumbles 'Top Shops' Christmas Event and the switch-on of the Christmas lights provided by Mumbles Community Council have been coordinated to occur at the same time this year -

at 7pm on Thursday 26th November.

The shops in upper Newton Road, will host their annual event
including live music, Father Christmas, Mumbles Inshore Lifeboat parade,
Santa's Grotto and late night shopping.

Mumbles Community Council have funded a new permanent illuminated Christmas Tree outside the Ostreme Centre, together with more street lighting display illuminations along Mumbles Road complementing those first used last year.

All the lights, including those along the Mumbles Road and Newton Road shopfronts, will be switched on simultaneously. The shops in lower Newton Road and adjacent Mumbles Road will also participate in the evening festivities.

Simon Weston, the Falklands War hero, will turn the lights on at 7pm from
outside the Ostreme Centre, where Oystermouth School choir will sing carols.
Simon will be signing copies of his book at 'Cover to Cover' Bookshop during
the evening.

This event gets bigger every year and is enjoyed by young and old alike. The
arrangements are subject to permissions for the necessary road closures and
the co-operation of the local constabulary which have been forthcoming in
previous years.
