REMEMBRANCE DAY 11TH NOVEMBER 2007
A service of remembrance will be held at All Saints Church, Oystermouth at 10 a.m. on Sunday 11th November 2007, followed by a dedication at the War Memorial in Southend Gardens, for those who fell in two world wars and in other conflicts since 1945.
People first gave donations to wear a poppy in Britain on 11th November 1921. The gesture had been inspired by a poem, "In Flanders Fields". The poem was written in 1915 by John McCrae a Canadian doctor who served during World War 1, and was first published anonymously in 'Punch'. The act of Two Minutes Silence began in 1919 following the Armistice at 11.00 am in 14th November 1918.
If you are interested in joining the 'Poppy People' call 0800 085 5924 or your local Branch of the Royal British Legion. Mr. A. Colburn, Chairman on 01792 362457

PRESS RELEASE
REPLACING THE LAMP STANDARDS ON MUMBLES ROAD.
|
nvest Wales provides grant towards the cost ofReplacinge Mumbles Road lamp standards
|
Mumbles Community Council has joined with the City & County of Swansea to replace and upgrade the street lighting along the Mumbles Road, between the roundabout at the White Rose Public House and Verdi’s Restaurant at a cost of £134,000.
Roger Beynon, Chairman of the Mumbles Community Council, who are financing 35% of the project, says that the existing lamp standards, which vary in size and design, require to be replaced for Health & Safety reasons, and the opportunity has been taken to de-clutter the road and to upgrade the lamp standards to a design more appropriate for a Victorian village setting with facilities for banners, decorative lights and flower baskets all built in at the manufacturing stage. The standards have been designed with a life span of 50 years.
C&C Swansea will be responsible for the installation and ongoing maintenance while MCC will be responsible for the cost of upgrading the lamp standards and for supplying and installing the banners and decorative lights. Councillor John Hague, C&CS Cabinet Member for the Environment has played a major role in ensuring the success of this scheme.
The Mumbles Tourist Association, a not for profit organisation which manages the Mumbles Tourist Information Centre, is supporting the project and has been awarded a Grant of £8000 by Invest Wales towards the cost of this project. Invest Wales is part of the Welsh Assembly Government whose Ministers have approved the Grant. This project serves as a prime example of inter community co-operation, which the Welsh Assembly and Westminster governments wish to encourage.
The award has been made from an investment grant scheme in support of HERIAN, heritage in action, and is conditional on the cultural heritage of South Wales being integrated into the scheme through banners. MTA has set up a banner competition and has invited State and Independent Schools attended by pupils from Mumbles to participate and to submit artwork created by their pupils for judging by a panel. The subject this year will be the famous Mumbles Railway 1807 – 2007. |

It is anticipated that entries will be judged during February when a display of all artwork will be arrangedin connectionwith an award ceremony when winners will be presented with a cash prize.
Mike Hollyman, Chairman of MTA wishes to thank Invest Wales for awarding the Grant, HERIAN for their advice and guidance, Gary Davies of the South West Wales Tourism Partnership and Alun Cairns AM, for their invaluable assistance in identifying the source of funds. |

MOTORISTS BEWARE - WATCH OUT WHERE YOU PARK IN MUMBLES
AS IT MIGHT COST YOU £95.00 IN CLAMPING FEES
The South Wales Evening Post 23 Oct. 07 reported that one unfortunate driver
who parked in Oystermouth Square had to cough up £95.00 for the clamp to be removed. It is alleged by drivers that "there was a sign saying the pay and display machine was out of order and to seen the parking attendant. There wasn't one about so they went off for walk and returned 45 minutes later, after walking to Verdi's for a coffee, to find their vehicle had been clamped.
Comment : I believe that it takes a little longer than 45 minutes to walk from Oystermouth Square to Verdis have coffee and walk back to the Square. However, if a sign was on display stating that one should see the parking attendant, and he was not there, perhaps the A1 Parking Services should be more considerate in this matter. We need visitors to come to Mumbles to support local traders.
COASTGUARD CREW PRAISED
The Rhossili based rescue team are nominated for bravery award when they
rescued John Govier who was swept into a rocky cove by violent waves whilst
surfing in Gower. He was plucked from the sea at Hillend and hoisted by a
sea helicopter. He escaped with little more that some cuts and bruises.
Steve Jones, a Coastguard for 31 years said it was the most difficult rescue
he had ever been involved in. We say, well done and an award is well
deserved. The Coastguards and Coast Watch do a great job keeping us
safe. BUT IT IS UP TO YOU TO ENSURE YOU KEEP AN EYE ON THE SEA
AND WEATHER CONDITIONS.
BROADBAND PROBLEMS WITH BT. IN GOWER?
BT are under the impression that relatively few people in Gower are experiencing problems, as they have only a few complaints logged. Feedback from as many people as possible who are experiencing problems, or have experienced them should be logged on the feedback page set up on the Commumity Councils' website. I have had a constructive letter from WAG, and Gavin is getting good support now from someone at BT, so hopefully we get some momentum going to get BT to try and get everyone a Broadband connection that wants it - it may only be 0.5mb, but it is still a lot better than dial-up. Once I was given a proper connection, despite being at the end of a long line and only getting 0.5mb, it has been totally stable - it has not disconnected once. Near neighbours of mine still cannot say the same. Please spread the word to get the comments posted.

LANGLAND BAY HOLIDAY HUTS!
HOW ON EARTH CAN THE CITY COUNCIL POSSIBLY EXPECT
THE AVERAGE RESIDENTS OF SWANSEA TO FIND £10,000
TO RENT A HUT AT LANGLAND BAY?
SURELY THE WHOLE IDEA IS TO PROVIDE A FACILITY FOR
ALL RESIDENTS TO ENJOY, NOT JUST THOSE FEW WHO
CAN AFFORD THIS TYPE OF EXPENDITURE!
