NOT JUST A PUZZLE FOR MONKEYS!
The saga of the monkey puzzle tree at Grange Primary School is still a puzzle
for the City & County. grange School and the New Welsh Medium School in West
Cross. The Editorial in the S. W. Eveneing Post Friday 16th May 08 may have
solvedthe problem! I quote "The monkey puzzle tree has been grown in Britain
since the 1850s. Its very name derives from the very sharp leaves that an early
admirer apprentley said it would puzzle a monkey to climb it.
But it has taken 160 years for it to be labelled as a danger to life and limb!
It is one thing to suggest that damaged roots could lead to it being toppled in a
high wind, but "syringe-like" leaves and falling fruit as a potential hazard to
pedestrians and vehicles!!!! Spare us from any more of this health and safety
jargon gone mad. Should we rip up every rose bush while we are at it?
It might not be the ideal tree to plant in school grounds (Ed.it has been there for
quite some time) but our children need to take their own risks. It is all part of
growing up. Once bitten, twice shy, as they say.
For the full story see the article in the South Wales Evening Post. Friday 16/5/08

OYSTERMOUTH SQUARE - THE NEXT PHASE!
The Developers have submitted an outline planning application to the City
and County Planners for a "Mixed development comprising, Retail (Class
A1), Commercial, Residendial (Class C3) and a Multi-storey Carpark (in the
old quarry opposite). Should wish to obtain further details a copy of the
plan is in the Mumbles Community Council Office, Walters Cres. or you can
see it at the Civic Centre, Planning Dept. Application No. 2008/0717.
I think Mike is just joking? (Ed.)
