March 2008

MUMBLES COMMUNITY COUNCIL WISH YOU A HAPPY

ST. DAVID'S DAY

LC2 Leisure Centre Swansea

WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO SPEND ONES 75th BIRTHDAY

I had a great time on the 19th March going on the 'Masterblaster' and the 'Flume'and then having a great meal at the Poolside Bistro. The facilities are excellent and the staff extremely helpful. I recommend it to all the older generation. The Editor.

p.s. The only problem could be the 4pm start, but as it is open 'til 9pm it should not matter in the summer.

MUMBLES IN BLOOM COMPETITION 2008

Mumbles in Bloom 2008

This year Mumbles in Bloom will be launched on 31st March

.
We have decided to put in an extra category for "First time Entrée" to

encourage the residents of Mumbles to enter the competition. Last year, as they toured the district, the judges were disappointed to see so many beautiful gardens and displays outside commercial premises, which had not been entered.

Mumbles Community Council invite all keen gardeners to make Mumbles a feast for the eyes and enter Mumbles in Bloom this year.
Judging will take place on 12th July. Closing date for entering the
competition will be 28th June.

Our judges this year will again be Ian Scott and Steve Prothero. This is the advice they give. "Pots and hanging baskets should be planted in such a way as to fill the container and cascade over the sides. This will give the appearance of a ball, so to speak."

"When we look at gardens we consider whether the plants are nourished, watered and dead headed, as well as looking at the floral display."

Our social event and prize giving will take place on 10th September. All who enter will be invited and we look forward to seeing all keen gardeners at that event.

ENTRY FORMS ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE COUNCIL OFFICE, WALTERS CRES.MUMBLES

WELL ARE YOU PREPARED TO PAY £10,000 FOR THE USE

OF A HUT AT LANGLAND AND DEPRIVE OTHERS OF THE

PLEASURE OF USING THEM?

LANGLAND BAY JAN 08

CITY & COUNTY OF SWANSEA ? DINAS A SIR ABERTAWE

Langland Bay Beach Huts New Letting Scheme
Background
The beach huts at Langland Bay have been an important part of the coastal landscape of
Swansea for many years. The 79 beach huts were originally constructed in the 1920’s and
are now coming to the end of their useful lives and will require replacement. City and
County of Swansea which owns and manages the huts, wants to take action to secure the
long term future of the huts so that they can be enjoyed by future generations.
Central to the plan for the huts is a new scheme for letting them to the Public. One new
hut will be built in the coming months to provide a guide as to the style and construction
of the huts and offers are being invited for the purchase of a new ten year lease. The
Council will rebuild as many huts as possible, dependent upon the number of acceptable
bids received. The huts to be rebuilt will be those currently in most need of attention but
no contract to rebuild any further huts will be entered into until both the formal commitment
to lease and the leasehold premium have been received.
Please refer to this paperwork for the main terms of the lease and contact details for any
applications or further queries.

Details of City and County of Swansea’s proposals for new beach hut lettings
Under the new letting scheme members of the public will be invited to purchase a 10 year
leasehold interest in a new beach hut for a price of £10,000 (plus VAT at 17.5%). The main
terms of the lease will be:-
i) Premium payable - £10,000 by the lessees (purchaser). Any Lessee wishing to
specify which particular hut they would like within the block being rebuilt can offer an
extra £2,000. This premium will be subject to VAT at 17.5 %. Any duplication in terms
of desired huts will, wherever possible, be resolved by negotiation, facilitated by the
City and County of Swansea.
ii) Lessees will pay 50% of the premium on signing the agreement and the balance on
completion of the hut and handover of the keys.
iii) The lease will be excluded from the terms of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 and
the lessees will not have the right to a new lease on the expiry of the term.
iv) The lessees will not be able to sell their interest in the hut nor will they be able to sublet
the hut.
v) The lessees will be required to maintain and decorate both the inside and the outside of
the hut every 3 years and in the last year of the lease term. The colour and materials
shall be subject to the Council’s specification. Council to undertake works in default
and any costs will be recovered from the lessee.
vi) The Council will be able to enter the hut to inspect and/or undertake emergency repairs
if necessary and any costs will be recovered from the lessee.
vii) Insurance – Lessees will be required to insure their hut.
viii) Lessees to pay all rates/taxes that fall due on the huts.
ix) Lessees not to make any alterations to the huts.
x) Lessees not to use the property for any illegal purpose or in a way that causes damage,
nuisance, injury or inconvenience and to keep hut in good, clean repair.
xi) To pay the Council’s Legal and surveyor’s costs, estimated at £400.
xii) The huts can be used 365 days a year, but using them overnight is not permitted.

LONGFIELDS ASSOCIATION

I have been approached by Mr. Arthur Davies, Dunvant to point out the

difficult financial situation this Association find themselves in.

They have been operating since formed, over 50 years ago by a small

group of parents. Some of the original founder members are still

supporting Longfields and Catherine Zeta Jones still a Patron.

They are in need of some £70,000 before the start of the new financial year

in April. Please help if you can by whatever means. Request help from the

City Council even, they appear to have plenty to spare!
