- MUMBLES WAR MEMORIAL
PRESS RELEASE – 20 MARCH 2007: NEXT PHASE
Mumbles Community Council was delighted to receive a plan for the next phase of the War Memorial to include the names of the Service Personnel who lost their lives in conflicts since World War 2, at the meeting held on March 13th.
The plan envisaged a paved area, large enough to accommodate wheelchairs, prams etc., that would surround the Memorial. Granite posts linked by chains would complete it.
The dedication would be on the central pillar; the names of the fallen placed on the plinths to its side.
Councillor Olive Rees, Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee, stated that this work is expected to be completed by late summer.

THE 'METRO BUS'
also known as the 'Bendy-bus'
MUMBLES COMMUNITY COUNCIL OPPOSES THE PROPOSED ROUTE OF THE METRO BUS ALONG THE PROMENADE BETWEEN BLACKPILL AND WEST CROSS.
It was decided at the March meeting of Mumbles Community Council to oppose the proposed route of the Metro Bus between Blackpill, where it would leave or enter the promenade between the Junction Café and the petrol filling station and West Cross where the access would be near the junction with Alderwood Rd. .
Amongst the Council’s concerns are: -
The proposed route is 1.25km or less than three-quarters of a mile and the points of exit or egress into Mumbles Road will need traffic light controls, which will exacerbate congestion problems.
3.5 metres of land are needed between Mumbles Road and the promenade, and at passing places this will double to 7 metres. .
There is no plan to separate the bus lane from the cyclists and pedestrians who use the promenade.
The proposal would inevitably lead to disturbance to the foreshore Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) between Blackpill and West Cross; the Council is pleased that the Gower Society, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) are also opposed to this proposal.
MUMBLES IN BLOOM 2007
The judging for this event will take place on Saturday 14th July; later on in the month, the gardens will more than likely be past their best, especially if the season is a hot one.
The standard of last year’s competition was high and the judges were suitably impressed. We saw many beautiful gardens that were not entered and the council would be more than pleased to see these keen gardeners take the plunge and enter into the spirit of it all this year. This is why this year, we have included an entry form in this newsletter so that obtaining one is made so easy for you.
We hope again to be able to have the same judges as last year; it was a pleasure to go around with them and hear their comments. The were Ian Scott and Steve Prothero

"let's start a campaign for a tidy
SWANSEA"
The Swansea Leader. Issue 48 March 2007
quote " Swansea Council is planning a two-pronged campaign to help make our city a cleaner place.
Specialist NEAT teams will be introduced to tidy up 'grot spots' --- litter louts can expect to face £75 finesfor dropping litter in the street. Since its launch in Oct.06 the current NEAT team has worked all over the city and county. Chief Executive of "Keep Wales Tidy" Mr. Tegwyn Jones said " tough action will be taken to tackle nasty problems --- residents should work together towards creating a cleaner, safer and tidier Swansea. It is hoped that the NEAT teams will begin work in April 2007.

Worms Head Station (Penrhyn-Gwyr)
The National Coastwatch Institution (N.C.I.) is a voluntary organisation set up in 1994 to restore a visual watch along the U.K. shores after many Coastguard stations had to close down because of government cuts.
When two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast below the recently closed lookout, local people decided to restore the visual watch and the first station opened at Bass Point on the Lizard. N.C.I. was born & others quickly followed. There are now 30 stations either operational, or, as in the case of Worms Head (Penrhyn Gwyr) Rhossili, recently (31st March 2007) set up.
Despite high technology and improved safety systems at sea, there is no substitute for a watchful pair of eyes.
The old Coastguard Lookout Station at Worms Head has been renovated by volunteers with the aid of donations from various sources. So far – twentyeight volunteers have come forward and have been trained. At the present time we are able to man the Station at weekends and Bank Holidays and we are hoping to be able to cover school holidays. To enable us to do this we need more volunteers, Now that we are up and running, volunteers will be given ‘hands-on’ training at the Station during the summer months.
The volunteers are also in the continuing process of fundraising in order to pay for renovations to the old station and the purchase of essential equipment
ie. (binoculars, telescope, V.H.F. sets, Walkie -Talkies, wind/solar power generator, charts etc., etc.) We estimate needing about £8,000 to become a viable station. A further £3,000 per annum estimated to run the station.
Volunteering is open to everybody. We are Watchkeepers, communicators and will be able to supply a vital service to the Search & Rescue Organisation. We are not physically involved in rescue work.
Volunteers are needed as Watchkeepers and/or fundraisers. No special skills are needed as training will be given. Previous experience obviously will be an advantage.
