WELCOME TO SUMMER
with a bit of luck we should see the sun again
If
you have a Mumbles story you'd like us to consider for publication,
please use the link on the right to contact us.
Thanks to Mike Witchell (Evening Post 6th
July) the Mumbles Community
Council has at last been recognised as a
serious Authority who are ensuring that
Mumbles is developing as a tourist
destination!
The one slight error is the fact that Mayals
does come under the influence of the
Mumbles Community Council ! (a little less of
the'grey beards' please). We might even
consider taking you on as our spokesperson. By the
way the sign is now in the correct position.
Cllr. A. Colburn at the ready.

THE SIX WEEK CONSULTATION PROCESS WILL INCLUDE PERMANENT AND MOBILE EXHIBITIONS AT THESE VENUES.

BANNED FROM CITY COUNCIL!
South Wales Evening Post 21st June 2007reported that Councillor Des Thomas was suspended by the City Councils Standards Committee.
I ASK THE QUESTION -WHY?
Surely by passing on the feelings and comments of his constituents he is doing the job he was elected for. The issue of "not following legal advice" on this matter is a subject for further discussion. Councillor Thomas should have been given the complete version of 'legal advice', not just the portion that supports the argument in favour of the Standards Committee.
Councillors should not be 'gagged' for stressing the views of their constituent.
It does not mean that Councillors have ' made up their minds before a planning application has been submitted' just because someone has objected to the idea. Surely it is only when the full details of a planning application is put before the Council can you see the detail, and then make a decision on the matter,
The main reason for declaring an interest and not making comment, surely is where one is likely to have a pecuniary and personal interest and gain some advantage. (Perhaps he should have declared an interest?)
The only person who was constrained from making comment was Councillor Mark Childs, who is a Governor of Grange Primary school, (as quoted in his letter to 'Have your say', South Wales Evening Post, 26th June 2007).
There has not been any objection to the building of a new school for the teaching of Welsh. THE MAIN OBJECTION SEEMS TO BE THE LOCATION IN WEST CROSS.
There are already two Primary schools in the area and it would be on safety grounds for the children and residents alike, that most people, and parents have objected.
If you have not seen the proposed plans, it is recommended that you see them, before you make a decision, and form an opinion of your own. Please let us have your comments.
SHOULD WE STIFLE FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND FREETHINKING?

MUMBLES NAVY DAYS REPORT
Mumbles Community Council's 5th Mumbles Navy
Days' has been hailed a great success. Organisers
announced record attendance of thousands each day.
Even on the one wet day, when several popular
attractions were cancelled, large numbers ventured
out and enjoyed the undercover events.
The Navy days' Concert at All saints Church was
enjoyed by a capacity audience, and featured the
Ystradgynlais Male Choir.
The visiting Royal Navy ships, HMS Tyne and HMS
Exploit, open to the public had many visitors over two
days. Members of HMS Tyne did a 25 miles walk
around Gower to raise funds as part of the Falklands
25 Commemoration and collected £500 for charity.
Several other Charity organisations collected monies
during Navy Days' (although it is not intended as a
Charity event) and about £1000 was collected for the
R.N.L.I.
Work has already started to organise Mumbles Navy Days' 2008, which will be held during 24th and 26 May2008. Any organisations or persons wishing to take part should contact the Mumbles Council via this web site as soon as possible, or 'phone 363598

REPORTS FROM THE SWANSEA LEADER.
HOW TO WIN YOUR COUNCIL TAX PAID FOR THIS YEAR!
SWANSEA COUNCIL'S RECYCLING TEAM IS LAUNCHING A NEW INCENTIVE SCHEME TO ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO USE THE KERBSIDE RECYCLING SERVICE.
TRISH FLINT, SWANSEA COUNCIL'S RECYCLING OFFICER SAID 'we've developed a whole range of opportunities for residents to recycle some of their domestic waste, every household in Swansea is provided with green bags so they can dispose of materials such as glass, paper and cans. Hopefully the offer to win one year's free Council Tax will encourage more people to recycle". The scheme will run for 12 months. (weunderstand that there is only one prize!)
Comment -If the Council were to reduce the council tax for everyone, this might also encourage people to recycle.
HOW TO ENTER - Pick up a 'tag' from County Hall or Guildhall Hall, District Housing Offices or the Environment Centre and place it around the neck of the tied green bag. You can download a 'tag' from the web site www.swansea.gov.uk
LANGLAND BAY BEACH HUTS
PLANS TO UPGRADE THE HISTORIC HUTS ARE BEING STEPPED UP, SO THE REPORT IN THE SWANSEA LEADER GOES.
THE 78 FAMOUS HUTS HAVE BEEN A FEATURE OF THE LANDSCAPE SINCE THE 1920s AND IT HAS NOW BEEN AGREED TO REBUILD THEM AND CHANGE THE LEASING ARRANGEMENTS.
THE REPORTS GOES ON THE SAY "THE IDEA FOLLOWS MARKET TESTING LAST YEAR WHEN PEOPLE WERE ASKED FOR THEIR VIEWS ON THIS PROPOSAL. (WERE YOU ASKED?) NEARLY HALF OF THE RESPONDENTS SAID THAT A FIVE YEAR LEASE WOULD BE THEIR FIRST CHOICE WHILE 35% PREFERRED A 10 YEARS LEASE AND 26% EXPRESSED AN INTEREST IN A 15 YEARS LEASE.
COMMENT - THIS MAKES SOME 61% WHO WENT FOR THE 10 OR 15 YEARS, SO A LOT LESS THAN 50% PREFERRED THE 5 YEARS OPTION. PERHAPS THE MUMBLES COMMUNITY COUNCIL COULD HAVE BEEN CONSULTED IN THIS MATTER?
SUBJECT TO PLANNING PERMISSION A NEW HUT WILL BE BUILT FOR MARKETING PURPOSES TO GIVE BIDDERS AN INDICATION OF THE STYLE OF REBUILD WITH TENDERS EXPECTED BACK BY THE AUTUMN. (THIS WILL RESTRICT THE RENTING TO A SMALL BUT FORTUNATE FEW! WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US!).
FURTHER COMMENT - WILL THE HUTS STILL BE OF THE SAME DESIGN OR WILL THEY CHANGE THE FACE OF LANGLAND BAY?
WILL THEY INCLUDE ELECTRIC SUPPLY FOR LIGHTING AND COOKING
WILL THEY BE SUBJECT TO THE SAME RESTRICTIONS OF USE ONLY DURING THE APRIL/SEPTEMBER PERIO?
PLEASE LET US HAVE YOUR VIEWS.
