Advert Doesn't Do Us Justice

Swansea Business Improvement District ( BID ) has produced a television advert to encourage people to visit Swansea.  Reception has been mixed. While the business community has been generally favourable, a large number of people have criticised it for not being distinctive enough.  “ It could be any town in Britain “  and  “ tuneless background music “ have been amongst the comments.  Many feel that the attractions which bring return visitors to the Swansea area, such as Mumbles and Gower, should have featured strongly.

Perhaps part of the problem lies in the shortness of the advert  -  30 seconds is not long enough to do justice to our city.

THE NEW BID TEAM

WHAT A GREAT IDEA FROM THE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT,

(BID) SWANSEA. THE IDEA OF EMPLOYING FOUR EXTRA CLEANERS TO HIT

THE GROT SPOTS IN THE CITY CENTRE IS GREAT. GOOD LUCK TO

JENNIE CLEMENTS AND HER TEAM. IT IS ABOUT TIME SOME ACTION

LIKE THIS WAS TAKEN IN MUMBLES. PERHAPS THE BID TEAM COULD

TAKE ON THIS TASK ALSO IN MUMBLES?

The Mumbles Community Council did employ a cleaner for one summer

period to keep it clean, but they could not find anyone to carry it on.

How about it. Can the businesses of Mumbles get together and support

such a scheme. Contact the Mumbles Community Council for details.

Beach Quality Improves

The beaches and sea quality continue to improve. Swansea Bay and the beaches at Bracelet Bay, Limeslade, Langland West and Caswell Central have all been commended in the recently published European cleanliness guidelines, despite the problems to water quality caused by the poor summer.

New Waste Disposal System Needed

Swansea continues to do well in the disposal of household waste. The present target for recycling and composting is 40%  and Swansea reaches 30%.  However, with landfill sites expected to be full in 7 years’ time the Environment Department is having to consider how to deal with the vast amount which is not recycled or composted.

The Welsh Assembly is looking to a recycling and composting target of 70% by 2024  /  2025.  This will probably entail a completely new approach to the problem of waste.  It is to be hoped that a real effort will be made to solve the problem of waste in Mumbles.

The large number of restaurants and pubs, the various take – away premises and the thousands of visitors leads to constant complaints about litter and waste disposal. We need a system worthy of the 21st Century

Dolphin at Langland Bay

Attempts were made, by the RSPCA and the coastguards, to rescue an injured dolphin at Langland Bay on 19th of November. Unfortunately, despite several hours of effort its injuries proved too severe and under the supervision of a vet it was put down.

Have you Seen a Yellow Breasted Bird?

Keep your eyes open for large, yellow breasted birds !  If you see one it won’t be a Jurassic Park canary but an oystercatcher.  Over a hundred of these birds have had their breast feathers dyed so that their movements can be tracked. If sighted please contact the British Trust for Ornithology.  Email :  niall.burton@bto.org.uk

Mumbles Road Dangers

The danger of the Mumbles Road for pedestrians was highlighted on the 17th of November when an elderly pensioner was taken to Morriston Hospital with serious head injuries following a collision with a motor bike.

Church Hall to Go

Longfields Hydrotherapy Pool and Fitness Room

The hydrotherapy pool at Longfields was built with a grant from the Big Lottery Fund and opened by Catherine Zeta Jones, the charity’s Patron, in 2005.

The pool was built initially to meet the needs of the disabled people who attend Longfields Day Centre, all of whom have multiple learning and physical disabilities mostly related to cerebral palsy.  Hydrotherapy has long been recognised as beneficial for relieving pain, increasing flexibility and improving muscle tone and strength.   The hydrotherapy pool is a now available to everyone in the community.  Because hydrotherapy also improves circulation, the pool is excellent for people in recovery and is used by several self-help groups every week.  Each Tuesday evening there is a ladies only session.

Longfields also has a fitness room, funded by Sport Relief, which can also be used by the community.  The equipment is suitable for everyone, including wheelchair users.  The fitness room is particularly suited to individuals or groups who wish to exercise in a more private environment.

For further information about hydrotherapy sessions or the fitness room please contact Jenny or Kelly on 01792 403220.

The hydrotherapy pool is also host to “Water Babies” where the main focus is on babies and parents have fun in the water and ultimately they aim to teach your baby to swim.  The hydrotherapy pool is ideal because the temperature is a constant 36 degrees C so the babies do not get cold.

For information about Water Babies please contact 01633 413 620 or mobile 07862289480.  Email:  wales@waterbabies.co.uk

Volunteers required:  Car Boot Sales

Longfields would like to host monthly car boot sales in their car park in Bethany Lane beginning in April 2008.  The aim is to provide a community car boot sale site and to help raise funds for Longfields.  If anyone is interested in helping to organise the car boot sale for a few hours each month, please contact Denise Hughes on 01792 404162 or email:  denisehughes@btconnect.com
