MUMBLES TRAIN AT SOUTHEND

Mayals Headmaster

This letter was sent to Cllr. Brian Arthur, MCC Govn'r to Mayals Primary School

CAN YOU HELP SOLVE THIS TENNIS MYSTERY?

We have received a request from Mrs. Susan Elks of Wythall, Birmingham to find

out more about a tennis racket made by William Button Maslen, Oystermouth,

Swansea around the 1830's. The photograph below gives the story so far. These

details were first published in the South Wales Evening Post on the 10th August

2001 by Paul Turner and again by Richard Youle on the 25th July 2008. So you can

see that this 'mystery' still needs to be solved.

Tennis racket

It has been established that Wiliam Button Maslen was born in Oystermouth around 1836.

He married Miss Lydia Maslen of Neath in 1862. He is listed as a Joiner by trade. The 1881

Census lists him living in Burrows Place, Mumbles but the 1889/90 Directory shows his

address as Arcadian Cottage, Mumbles Road.

If you have any information or knowledge regarding this. Please contact the Editor

of this web site by 'phone 363598 or email council@mumbles.gov.uk

Mumbles In Bloom Competition 2008

Congratulations to all winners and runners up who entered the Mumbles In Bloom

competition this year and contributed to its success.

The Judges, Mr. Ian Scott and Mr. Rob Harris were impressed with the standard of

entries and made the comment  that the gardens and floral displays reflected the

amount of hard work it takes to reach such a high standard.  This year we were

pleased to receive several “First Time Entries” and two extra entries for “Displays

Outside Cottages”.  It has been a joy to drive round the Mumbles Community and

see such glorious flower displays.

One sad note;  Mr. Dyke, from Southlands Drive, entered the competition and died

a few weeks later.  Mr. Dyke has been a winner for several years and the Mumbles

Community Council together with the judges wish to pay tribute to his efforts in

contributing to the success of Mumbles in Bloom.

This years winners are as follows: Mr&Mrs M. Church, Clifton Terrace;(Joint)

Mr.E.Goulding, Sycamore Rd (Joint), Mr&Mrs E. Davies, The Old Coach House;

Ms Ellerton,  Park Street;  Mrs S Saunders West Cross Inn;  Mrs J Gough, Mill

Gardens Residents Association;  Miss S  Evans, Whitestone School;  Jan & Len

Clarke (The Coast House).

This year a special award will be given to Mr. Brian Morgan who solely looks after

the Llanfair House gardens and maintains it to such a high standard.

We look forward to seeing you all at the prize giving in September.

Best wishes to you all from

Community Councillor Linda Tyler-Lloyd

Chairman of the Development Committee (photos to follow)

Mumbles Community Council add their congratulations to the

worthy winners !

MUMBLES PIER FACELIFT PLANS!

I see from the report in the South Wales Evening Post Tues. 5th August 08 ( by

Jason Evans email jason.evans@swwmedia.co.uk) that the owners of Mumbles

Pier have plans to develop a 150-bed hotel and spa also restore the pier in a £39m

project. It is reported that Swansea City Council's will meet on Thursday 7th Aug.

to consider a draft development framework.

The owners Ameco, plan to include a conference and exhibition centre,

restaurants and a family entertainment centre as well as improved public spaces

with a new boardwalk linking the site to Knab Rock.

I feel certain that Mumbles Community Council will join others in wishing success

to such an imaginative project.
