Mumbles Community Council: Press Release 20 January 2010
Mumbles Councillors have reduced their budget for the second year in a row.
At its budget meeting last night the Community Council agreed a budget of £139,980 for the 2010/2011 financial year compared with £144,318 for the current year.
Taking into account statutory required contingency funds and a small budget under-spend this will require a precept (the money required from the domestic council tax payer) of £113,684 which works out at £11.96 for the year for a Council Tax Band ‘D’ payer.
“Great effort has been made by all the council committees to keep their budget requirements to a minimum in the light of the current financial situation facing the country.” said Cllr Anthony Colburn, Chairman of the Council’s Finance & General Purposes Committee. “However, services will not be reduced and environmental improvements will continue.”
NEW YEAR - NEW CAR PARK CHARGES!
Well what did you expect? To quote the comment from one Evening Post reader "If you upset enough motorists, they will cease to visit the Swansea area, and more shops will be forced to closed through lack of customers"
See the full report in the Evening Post by Richard Youle,1st January 2010
He states that parking used to be free from 1st October until 31st March in car parks at Southend, Bracelet Bay, Caswell Bay and Hill, Langland Bay, Knab Rock and Clyne Park. Now all year round charges apply, meaning that locals and visitors (alike) will have to pay £1.20 for an hour or £2.20 for 2 hours parking, (yet you can park all-day for only £3.60). These charges apply from 7am until 7 pm. You can, if you have a boat to launch and a car to park pay only £6.20, which one presumes is for all day parking?
Don't miss the fact that, at Knab Rock "There are no concessions for Blue Badge holders.
Note that car parks at Port Eynon and Horton, in Gower, are exempt from all-year round charges.
(see the comments by the Evening Post on Page 21. If you have any comments please contact the Editor of the Mumbles Community Council's web site, or your City Councillor).

Producing, transporting and storing food uses a lot of energy water and
packaging, which is wasted if the food gets thrown away uneaten. Most of the
food thrown away ends up in landfill sites. This creates methane to be
released into the atmosphere. Methane is a powerful green house gas and a
significant contributor to climate change.
Swansea Waste Forum will be looking at ways we can address this problem in an interactive and informative meeting on Friday the 29th January between
9am & 11am at The Environment Centre. Not be missed by anyone working with or interested in food and/or waste in general.

Make Mumbles and Swansea a cleaner and healthier place to live in.
THE BIG APPLE IS ON THE MOVE!
a report in the Evening Post, 29th January, suggests that the 80 year old structure, damaged in an accident last August may have to be relocated.
A spokesman for Ameco said "We do not have a start date but the poor weather has made site preparations difficult. Once started, the actual work should not take longer that a few weeks".
It could be moved to a site on the foreshore or onto the Mumbles Pier.
The feeling of local residents and visitors is that this is an iconic monument to the 30's and should be saved. Let's hope this can be achieved. (MCC Editor's comments only)
