Well St. David's Day came and went but we did not get any photos from local Mumbles Primary schools to publish on this page. It's not to late. Please send them to the Editor, or any other items of interest you would like published.
GYPSY TRAVELLER SITE AT LANGLAND?
I read in the Evening Post an article by, reporter, Liz Perkins, that "last year Swansea City Council leader Chris Holley ... said Gower beauty-spot Langland had been looked at --- the criteria had made it difficult to find an appropriate site, he further said " We are going to put forward a proposal to a member working group which looks at the whole concept of a site. No site has been picked out yet - we have been looking for five to seven years."
The current gypsy site is based at Pantyblawd Road, Llansamlet

Vandalism at Underhill Park
Semi mature Beech trees valued at hundreds of pound had to be felled by Council tree workers after being vandalised on two separate occasions over the last few days.
The group of beech tree were growing in the corner of Underhill Park next to the Newton Road/ Langland Road junction.
The first act vandalism was last Thursday 11th March and the second was 16th March.
On both occasions the trees had all been cut with a hand saw, some were cut through but the remainder have had to be cut down for safety reasons. The person or persons who vandalised these trees did so in full view of anyone waiting at the traffic lights or walking along either road.
Anyone in the area could possibly have seen these acts of vandalisms as they carried out this act of vandalism.
The Council are at a loss to understand the reason for the this vandalism which has been reported to the police and appeal to anyone who saw anyone cutting these trees or anything suspicious in this corner of the park on either of the above dates to contact Mumbles Police Constable Walker, phone 07805301611 or Mumbles Community Council phone 01792 363598, or the Parks Department via the Civic Centre phone 0792 636000.
WHO WOULD BE SELFISH ENOUGH TO DESTROY BEAUTIFUL TREES ?
REPORT THESE CRIMINALS!
MAYALS PRIMARY SCHOOL is set to celebrate 50 years!
Mayals Primary School opened on 4th January 1960, as reported by the current Head Teacher, Mr. Damien Beech.
The first Headship was in the hands of Mr. W. D. Minty who welcomed the local children. The school was officially opened by Miss Olive Stewart on Tuesday 29th March 1960. This was recorded by Mr. Minty in the school Log Book as follows:-
"School officially opened by Miss Olive Stewart. The children were dismissed at 12 noon. A choir of 25 boys and girls gave a concert in the afternoon as part of the celebrations."
The Log Book also goes on to tell familiar stories of school years littered with concerts, problems with absenteeism, inspectors, sports days and much more.
A number of Head Teachers, Mr Beech reports have had the pleasure of leading Mayals Primary school after Mr. Minty, including Mr. Gregory, Mr. Ellis, Mr. Harris, Mrs. Griffiths, Mrs. Walker, Mr. Saunders and now the current Head Mr. Damien Beech.
To mark this special occasion of the 50th anniversary, there will be a series of celebrations in the summer term.
Look out for the details in the local media for ways of getting involved. In the meantime, if you have any old photographs or memories that you would like to share, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
As an additional item we would like to remind parents, and pupils the Pat Thomas, or "Auntie Pat", as she is better known has retired as Mayals school's crossing patrol lady. Pat has helped the children keep safe for the last 18 years and before that she worked as the school's caretaker.
Pat's children also went to the school as did her grandchildren. Pat certainly helped Mr. Beech learn all of the children's names at the end of the day, when she was giving out her 'treats' to the children as they went home.
Pat will be fondly remembered and whenever she chooses to visit Mayals school she will receive a very warm welcome from the Head, Staff and pupils.
Mr. Damien Beech, Head Teacher.
