Cllr Roger Beynon

Roger Beynon was elected Chairman of Mumbles Community Council at the AGM of the Council on 8th May, taking over from Cllr. Lilian Pritchard who had been Chair for two years.

Cllr. Beynon was born in Oakland Road, Mumbles and now lives in Castle Crescent in a house built by his grandfather in 1924. Both his parents come from longstanding Mumbles families. His mother’s family ran the sub-post office at Southend, Mumbles from its inception until its closure in 1960. His paternal grandfather, with his brothers, built extensive areas of Mumbles including the commercial heart of Newton Road.

After attending Oystermouth Infants, Mumbles Junior Mixed and Dynevor Schools he took a degree in Civil Engineering at Imperial College, London University. Specialising in Municipal Water Supply and Effluent Disposal Schemes he spent much of his 40 year career overseas, including working Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Nigeria, Kuwait, Iraq, Hong Kong and Turkey.

Although he has been a Community Councillor for only 18 months Cllr. Beynon is and experienced hand at this tier of local government, having served as a Councillor on Northill Parish Council in Bedfordshire for 14 years, three of those as Chairman of the Council.

He has been married to April for 34 years and they have four children, a son currently serving in Iraq with the Royal Welsh Regiment, and three daughters, two of whom are teachers, while the youngest is a student at Cardiff University.

Roger says that he is looking forward to serving the Mumbles Community and the Council as Chairman. “Mumbles is a unique and very special area, it requires constant vigilance to ensure that any proposed changes or developments enhance and not detract from its character, and the quality of life of Mumbles residents. Nowhere can stand still, but all development proposals, whether backed by the City and County of Swansea or not, need to be scrutinised. The Community Council is assiduous in doing this.” He adds that he would welcome greater public interest and participation in the work of the Council, which can only truly represent the interests of the residents Mumbles if they keep Councillors informed of their concerns.
